Furman Men's Soccer Edges College of Charleston in OT

Charleston, SC-- Furman freshman Jody Keeling rifled a shot to the near post 1:11 into overtime as the 15th-ranked Paladins defeated College of Charleston 2-1 Wednesday night at Remley's Point to remain undefeated at 6-0.

Keeling, a reserve forward, checked into the match for the first time at the start of the overtime period. Keeling took a John Barry Nusum flick off a Daniel Alvarez 30-yard throw in to score the game-winner.

Furman took an early first half lead with a John Barry Nusum goal at the 20:43 mark. Daniel Alvarez headed a John Bradford indirect kick to Nusum to set up the goal. Furman maintained their 1-0 lead through the first half and into the second.

The Cougars Kevin Asman evened the score with 20 minutes to play as he rebounded a reflected Andrew Kelly direct kick. Furman then attempted a number of late shots, but the Cougars withstood the Paladin rally to force overtime.

Senior Daniel Alvarez recorded two assists on the afternoon, increasing his career total to 31, two shy of the Furman career assists record.

"This was a hard-fought, physical game," said Furman head coach Doug Allison. "I am proud of our players because we didn't give up and we came back hard after they tied the score. It was great to see Jody Keeling score his first collegiate goal like that in overtime."

A total of 35 fouls were committed in the match and seven combined yellow cards were issued.

Furman improves to 6-0, the best start in school history and they match their longest ever unbeaten streak at six matches.
