FURMAN SOCCER BLANKS THE CITADEL 4-0; ALVAREZ TIES CAREER ASSIST MARK
GREENVILLE -- The 13th-ranked Furman men's soccer team defeated The Citadel 4-0 Wednesday night on Tobacco Free Kids Coalition Night at Eugene Stone Soccer Stadium.
For the second straight match, Furman struck in the opening seconds of the match as Daniel Alvarez scored a goal off a John Barry Nusum assist 35 seconds into the match. In Furman's 7-1 win over Wofford, Nusum scored 16 seconds into the match.
The Paladins kept the pressure on early as they got their second goal of the night at the 6:40 mark as Andy Foy headed in his fourth goal of the season. Matt Goldsmith's header off a Daniel Alvarez 30-yard throw-in set up the goal and put Daniel Alvarez in the Furman record books. Alvarez, a senior from Fayetteville, N.C., tied the Furman all-time assist record with his 33rd career assist. Alvarez ties Jeff Jones' mark, a record that has stood since 1987.
Late in the first half, the Paladins scored their third goal as Carl Junot nailed his third goal of the season off a Paul Leese assist.
Furman's leading scorer, John Barry Nusum, tallied the final goal for the Paladins off a Carl Junot assist at the 64:39 mark.
"I thought we played well today," said Furman head coach Doug Allison. "I'm excited to see Daniel Alvarez set that record. He has been an instrumental component to our program over the last four years and I think this record shows that."
The Paladins improve to 9-1-1 overall and 3-0 in the Southern Conference. The Citadel falls to 2-9, 0-4. Furman is ranked 13th in the nation in the NSCAA and Soccer Times polls, while they are 17th in Soccer America.
