FURMAN SOCCER DOWNS BELMONT 4-1
GREENVILLE -- The 17th ranked Furman men's soccer team defeated Belmont 4-1 Wednesday night at Eugene Stone Soccer Stadium.
Senior Daniel Alvarez' thirty yard throw-ins were the story in the first half. Just 3:30 into the match Alvarez tossed a ball from the sideline to the mouth of the goal, where leading scorer John Barry Nusum finished the play. Just ten minutes later, Alvarez did the same thing, this time resulting in an own goal as a Belmont defender deflected the ball into the net.
Belmont pulled to within 2-1 on a Luke Photivihok goal off a Carlos Macioch pass at the 18:04 mark.
The Paladins kept their one goal lead until the middle of the second half when senior Graham Seagraves rifled a direct kick past Bruin keeper David Kopki. Senior Andy Foy finished off the scoring at the 82:24 mark as he took a Jack Handy cross that was deflected by Geno Mayes and scored his first goal of the season.
"I am glad to come away with another win and stay unbeaten," said Furman head coach Doug Allison. "We need to step up our level of play, though, if we plan to compete at the top levels."
Furman improves to 3-0, while Belmont falls to 1-2 on the season. The Paladins travel to Atlanta to face Georgia State Sunday at 2 p.m.
