DANIEL ALVAREZ NAMED SOCON PLAYER-OF-THE-YEAR;

SEVEN PALADINS NAMED ALL-SOUTHERN CONFERENCE

CHARLESTON, SC -- Seven members of the 1999 Southern Conference champion Furman men's soccer team were named All-Southern Conference on Thursday, while senior Daniel Alvarez earned conference player-of-the-year honors.

Alvarez, a senior from Fayetteville, N.C., tied the Furman single season assist record this season with 12 and became Furman's all-time leader in assists. Alvarez now has 37 career assists. Alvarez was also named first team All-Southern Conference for the third straight season.

Furman led the conference with a total of five first team selections. Joining Alvarez' on the first team was goalkeeper Scott Blount, forward John Barry Nusum, midfielder Matt Goldsmith, and defender Seth Marks. Blount leads the conference and is seventh in the nation with a goals against average of 0.61. Nusum is Furman's leading scorer and is fourth in the conference in scoring. Goldsmith is a member of the US Under-20 National Team and was a preseason College Soccer Weekly All-American. Seth Marks is making his second consecutive first team appearance as he has led a stingy Paladin defense this season.

Two Paladins were selected to the second team as Stephen Rodriguez and Graham Seagraves round out the Paladin contingent.

Furman head coach Doug Allison, who has led the Paladins to a 15-1-1 record and a national ranking of fourth in the Soccer America poll earned league coach-of-the-year honors. Allison received his third coach-of-the-year recognition in his five year career at Furman.
