NUSUM, GOLDSMITH, ALVAREZ EARN MORE ALL AMERICA HONORS
GREENVILLE, SC -- Furman men's soccer standouts John Barry Nusum, Matt Goldsmith, and Daniel Alvarez were honored as All Americans for the second time this season as College Soccer Online named all three to its All America teams.
Nusum and Goldsmith were selected to the College Soccer Online second team, while Alvarez was a third team pick. Earlier this month, Alvarez and Nusum were named first team All Americans by the NSCAA, while Goldsmith was a second team selection.
Sophomore forward John Barry Nusum produced one of the most successful single season point productions in Furman history. Nusum, who scored 17 goals while tallying nine assists, placed third on the Furman single season points chart with 43. One of the most exciting players in the region, Nusum finished 11th in the nation in points. Nusum was also a first team All-South region selection and a first team All-Southern Conference pick.
Sophomore defender/midfielder Matt Goldsmith adds second team All-America honors to an already impressive collegiate resume. Goldsmith, a member of the U.S. Under 20 National Team, is a member of the 1999 first team All-South Region team, a two-time first team All-SoCon selection, a College Soccer Weekly honorable mention All-American in 1998, and the Southern Conference freshman-of-the-year in 1998. Goldsmith finished the year with four goals and an assist.
Senior Daniel Alvarez culminated a great career with a stellar senior season. Furman's all-time leader in career assists with 41, Alvarez broke Furman's single season assist mark and finished first in the nation in assists with 16 on the year. Alvarez also earned first team All-South Region, Southern Conference player-of-the-year, and first team All-Southern Conference honors this season.
Furman's 1999 squad was the most successful soccer team in Furman history and one of the most successful athletic teams in Furman history. Furman also finished the season in the nation's top twenty in scoring (14th), team defense (13th), and winning percentage (2nd). The Paladins finished with a perfect 8-0 Southern Conference mark, won the Southern Conference tournament championship, and advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament.
