THREE PALADINS SELECTED TO ALL AMERICA TEAM

GREENVILLE, SC -- A record three Furman men's soccer players were named to the NSCAA/adidas All-America team, including two first team selections. Daniel Alvarez and John Barry Nusum were selected as first team All-Americans, while Matt Goldsmith was a second team choice.

Alvarez and Nusum join Pete Santora ('97) as the only first team All-America selections in Furman's history. Santora was a first team choice in 1996 and 1997. Furman's two first team members equal Indiana and SMU's two selections as the most for one school on this year's squad.

Sophomore forward John Barry Nusum produced one of the most successful single season point productions in Furman history. Nusum, who scored 17 goals while tallying nine assists, placed third on the Furman single season points chart with 43. One of the most exciting players in the region, Nusum finished 11th in the nation in points. Nusum was also a first team All-South region selection and a first team All-Southern Conference pick. He is honored as one of the top four forwards in the nation with this award.

Senior Daniel Alvarez culminated a great career with a stellar senior season. Furman's all-time leader in career assists with 41, Alvarez broke Furman's single season assist mark and finished first in the nation in assists with 16 on the year. Alvarez also earned first team All-South Region, Southern Conference player-of-the-year, and first team All-Southern Conference honors this season. He is honored as one of the top four midfielders in the nation with this award.

Sophomore defender/midfielder Matt Goldsmith adds second team All-America honors to an already impressive collegiate resume. Goldsmith, a member of the U.S. Under 20 National Team, is a member of the 1999 first team All-South Region team, a two-time first team All-SoCon selection, a College Soccer Weekly honorable mention All-American in 1998, and the Southern Conference freshman-of-the-year in 1998. Goldsmith finished the year with four goals and an assist.
