1998 RESULTS

A little about each match ...


# 16 Furman 1, UAB 0

Sept. 1, 1998

The Paladins opened the season with a 1-0 victory over a talented UAB squad. Junior transfer Ryan Conway (from Clemson) scored the game's only goal on an indirect kick off a touch from Stephen Rodriguez. Ronnie Pascale recorded his first shutout of the season in the victory.


# 16 Furman 1, #15(NSCAA) Bowling Green 0

Sept. 4, 1998

Furman improved to 2-0 with a 1-0 win in the opening round of the Ohio State/Nike Soccer Classic over 15th ranked Bowling Green. Once again, it was transfer Ryan Conway's indirect kick off a Rodriguez touch that produced the game's only goal. Pascale increased his shutout total to two.


# 16 Furman 0, Ohio State 0

Sept. 6, 1998

Despite numerous scoring opportunities, Furman played Ohio State to a scoreless tie. Ronnie Pascale increased his shutout total to three as he did not allow a goal in any of the Paladins first three matches. Pascale was selected Southern Conference Player of the Week and was selected to the SoccerAmerica Team of the Week for his three shutout performance. Pascale, Graham Seagraves, and Andy White were all selected to the Ohio State/Nike Classic All-Tournament Team.


# 19 Furman 4, College of Charleston 1

Sept. 9, 1998

The Paladins won their Southern Conference opener in convincing fashion as Furman downed College of Charleston 4-1 in front of over 1100 spectators. The Paladins who led 1-0 at the intermission off a Daniel Alvarez goal, increased the lead to 4-0 before having the first goal of the season socred on them, killing Pascale's fourth shutout. Stephen Rodriguez, Geno Mayes, and Andy Foy each scored second half goals for the Paladins.


# 19 Furman 1, Navy 0 Sept. 12, 1998

Furman downed the Naval Academy 1-0 in the opening round of the First Union/Nike Classic at the College of Charleston. Matt Goldsmith scored his first collegiate goal for the game winner. Furman outshot Navy 22-7 on the match. The win marked yet another shutout for Pascale, his fourth of the season in five matches.


# 19 Furman 2, Florida Atlantic 1

Sept. 13, 1998

Furman remained unbeaten and improved to 5-0-1 as they defeated Florida Atlantic 2-1 in the final match of the First Union/Nike Classic at the College of Charleston. Stephen Rodriguez scored the first goal with eight seconds remaining in the first half off assists from Andy White and Shaun Stone. Vaughn Bethell put Furman up 2-0 early in the second half before FAU cut the lead to 2-1.


# 17 Furman 4, UNCG 3

Sept. 16, 1998

Furman edged UNCG 4-3 in a crucial early season Southern Conference match up at Eugene Stone Stadium. After falling behind 1-0 early in the match on a Siggy Eyjolfsson penalty kick, Furman freshman Vaughn Bethell evened the score off assists from Paul Leese and Stephen Rodriguez. Rodriguez put the Paladins ahead 2-1 at the 30:36 mark of the first half off assists from John Barry Nusum and Graham Seagraves. Less than two minutes later, UNCG evened the score at 2-2 on a David Monroe goal. Furman went back on top at the 35:53 mark as Graham Seagraves scored for the Paladins off an assist from Seth Marks. Furman held its 3-2 lead for the next 35 minutes until UNCG tied the match at 3-3 at the 69:12 mark on a direct kick. Five minutes later, Andy Foy scored the game-winner off assists from John Barry Nusum and Shaun Stone. With the win, Furman took the upper hand in the race for the Southern Conference regular season championship and ultimately this match was the tiebreaker for the top seed in the conference tournament.


# 17 Furman 5, Georgia State 0

Sept. 19, 1998

Furman increased its nation-leading unbeaten streak to eight matches as the Paladins downed Georgia State 5-0. Geno Mayes scored the first two goals of the match as John Barry Nusum, Shaun Stone, and Sean Nickerson also added goals. The win improves Furman to 7-0-1, the best start in the schools's 32 year soccer history. Ronnie Pascale collected his fifth shutout of the season with the victory.


# 14 Furman 2, #18 UNCC 2

Sept. 23, 1998

Furman scored two goals in the final 15 minutes as the Paladins rallied to tie 18th ranked UNC Charlotte 2-2. UNCC scored its first goal just 12 seconds into the match, the fourth quickest goal in NCAA history. The 49ers then scored late in the first half to take a 2-0 lead to intermission. Graham Seagraves put the Paladins on the board first with a penalty kick goal at the 75:05 mark of the second half. Seth Marks scored the game-tying goal from 30-yards out with only 25 seconds to play.


# 5 South Carolina 1, # 14 Furman 0

Sept. 27, 1998

Furman suffered its first defeat of the season at the hands of the fifth ranked Gamecocks. South Carolina scored late in the first half on a direct kick and despite a barrage of Paladin shots in the second half, held on to win 1-0. Furman outshot South Carolina 15-7 in the match.


# 15 Furman 2, New Hampshire 0

Oct. 2, 1998

Freshman John Barry Nusum scored two goals in a four minute span late in the second half to propel Furman to a 2-0 victory over New Hampshire in the first round of the Clemson/Adidas Soccer Invitational. Furman outshot New Hampshire 17-5.


# 15 Furman 1, CAL Poly SLO 0

Oct. 4, 1998

Furman's Stephen Rodriguez scored a late goal to lift the Paladins to a 1-0 victory over CAL Poly SLO in the final match of the Clemson/Adidas Invitational. Furman controlled the flow of the match, outshooting CAL Poly SLO 13-3. Seth Marks was named defensive MVP of the tournament, while John Barry Nusum and Ronnie Pascale were also selected to the all-tournament team. Pascale recorded his seventh shutout of the season aand second of the tournament.


Davidson 1, # 12 Furman 0

Oct. 7, 1998

Davidson stunned 12th ranked Furman 1-0 at Eugene Stone Stadium on a rain soaked field as Andrew Holbrook scored the lone goal of the match with 14 minutes to play in regulation.


# 12 Furman 3, Wofford 0

Oct. 10, 1998

Furman scored three goals in the second half as the Paladins rebounded from the Davidson loss to top Wofford 3-0. Graham Seagraves scored the first goal on a penalty kick and Brent Rosser scored twice. Pascale recorded his eighth shutout of the season.


# 16 Furman 3, Georgia Southern 1

Oct. 14, 1998

The Daniel Alvarez-John Barry Nusum connection sparked the Paladins to a 3-1 victory over Georgia Southern in Statesboro. Alvarez scored the first goal early in the match off an assist by Nusum. After Georgia Southern tied the score at 1-1, Alvarez put Furman on top for good off another assist from Nusum. With six seconds to play in the match, Nusum scored off assists from Alvarez and Stephen Rodriguez.


# 16 Furman 6, Appalachian State 0

Oct. 18, 1998

John Barry Nusum stole the show for the Paladins as he tied Furman's single game goals and points record with four goals and one assist for nine points in a 6-0 victory over Appalachian State at Eugene Stone Stadium. Andy Foy and Jack Handy also added goals for the Paladins. Brent Rosser, Daniel Alvarez, and Seth Marks each had two assists in the match. Ronnie Pascale celebrated his last regular season home match with his ninth shutout of the season. John Barry Nusum was selected as Southern Conference Player-of-the-Week for scoring five goals and recording three assists on the week. He was also named to the Soccer America Team of the Week.


# 13 Furman 3, The Citadel 1

Oct. 20, 1998

John Barry Nusum struck again as he scored a goal and recorded an assist as Furman topped The Citadel 3-1 in Charleston. Graham Seagraves scored the first goal for Furman on a penalty kick at the 7:15 mark in the first half. After The Citadel evened the score at 1-1, Andy Foy scored the game-winner off a Nusum assist at the 34:20 mark. Less than two minutes later, Nusum scored his sixth goal in the last three matches to put Furman up 3-1 at the intermission.


# 3 Clemson 2, # 13 Furman 0

Oct. 25, 1998

Furman lost a tough match to third ranked Clemson. After a scoreless first half, Clemson got on the board with a Wojtek Krakowiak goal at the 65:49 mark. Furman saw a would-be tying goal by Stephen Rodriguez called back for off sides a few minutes later. Clemson scored on a late Scott Bower goal to make the score 2-0.


# 14 Furman 2, VMI 0

Oct. 31, 1998

Furman finished off the regular season with a 2-0 victory at VMI. Freshman Matt Goldsmith scored the game-winner off an assist from Daniel Alvarez early in the match. Just a few minutes later, senior Paul Leese scored his first goal as a Paladin off assists from Daniel Alvarez and Stephen Rodriguez. Alvarez's assist marked his 10th of the season. Furman enters the Southern Conference Tournament as the #1 seed.


# 13 Furman 3, Wofford 0

Nov. 3, 1998

Furman advanced in the first round of the Southern Conference Tournament with a 3-0 victory over Wofford at Eugene Stone Soccer Stadium. Brent Rosser scored the first goal of the match off a John Barry Nusum assist 11 minutes into the match. Nusum then scored his tenth goal of the season off Seth Marks and Ryan Conway assists nine minutes later. Geno Mayes added the game's third and final goal late in the second half. Ronnie Pascale recorded his 11th shutout of the season, tying Ed Stein's record for single season shutouts.


# 13 Furman 3, Appalachian State 2

Nov. 7, 1998

Furman advanced to the finals of the Southern Conference Tournament with a 3-2 victory over Appalachian State. After falling behind, 1-0, Furman's Paul Leese tied the match with a header off a Jack Handy pass. Shaun Stone put the Paladins on top midway through the second half as Matt Goldsmith flicked a Daniel Alvarex throw-in to Leese. Brent Rosser extended the Paladin lead just a few minutes later as he stole the ball from Appalachian State keeper Robert Black who was attempting to recover a John Barry Nusum pass. The Mountaineers scored a late goal to close the margin to 3-2. Furman tied a school record for wins with the victory.


# 24 (NSCAA) UNC Greensboro 1, # 13 Furman 0

Nov. 8, 1998

Furman fell short in its attempt to win its third straight Southern Conference Tournament Championship as UNC Greensboro edged Furman 1-0. Furman missed several opportunites in the match, including a would-be goal that was called back because of off-sides. UNCG's Alejandro Moreno scored the game's only goal with 15 minutes to play. Furman falls to 16-4-2 and will have to wait on an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.
