Matt Goldsmith Competing As Member of U.S. Under-20 National Team

GREENVILLE, SC -- Furman freshman defender Matt Goldsmith is currently preparing to compete as a member of the United States Under-20 National Team at the 1999 FIFA Under-20 World Youth Championships in Nigeria in April '99.

Goldsmith, from Roswell, Ga., has been a member of the U.S. National Team since 1997 and has been in training for the 1999 World Championships since January. Goldsmith is currently competing with the US team in Seville, Spain and will spend a week in Morocco beginning March 8 before returning to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., for the squad's final training camp before the World Championships. The World Championships will be held in Nigeria from March 29 to April 24.

Goldsmith has been a starter on the team during the past year and started in the national team's preliminary matches in January.

As a freshman at Furman, Goldsmith was selected as an honorable mention All-American by College Soccer Weekly after being named the 1998 Southern Conference Freshman-of-the-Year and first team All-Southern Conference. He scored two goals, both game-winners, while recording three assists on the season for 7 points.
