Furman Advances In SoCon Tournament With 3-0 Victory Over Wofford

GREENVILLE, SC -- Brent Rosser scored on a John Barry Nusum pass 11:35 into Furman's first round Southern Conference Tournament match against Wofford Tuesday night at Eugene Stone Stadium to give the 13th ranked Paladins an early advantage in their quest for the tournament title and NCAA play-in bid.

Eight minutes later Nusum headed a pass from Seth Marks and Ryan Conway into the back of the net to give the Paladins a 2-0 advantage at the half.

Thirty minutes into the second half, after a number of chances, the Paladins connected again as Geno Mayes directed a Matt Goldsmith dish past goalkeeper Daniel Wilson to give Furman the third goal of the night at the 78:20 mark. Just a few minutes later, Mayes again put the ball in the back of the net, but the goal was canceled on an off-sides call.

Paladin goalkeeper Ronnie Pascale recorded his record-tying 11th shutout of the season. He ties a mark set by Ed Stein in 1991.

"This was a good start," said Furman head coach Doug Allison of his team's first round performance. "We have to step it up and get the job done this weekend to win this tournament."

With the victory, the Paladins improved to 15-3-2 on the night and earned a berth in the Southern Conference semifinals Saturday at 11:30 a.m. versus Appalachian State at Davidson College. The loss dropped Wofford to 2-17-2 on the season.
