No. 24 UNCG Slips Past No. 13 Furman, 1-0, To Win Socon Final

Davidson, N.C. -- Freshman forward Alejandro Moreno scored on a diving header in the 75th minute to give No. 24 UNC Greensboro a 1-0 win over No. 13 Furman in the Southern Conference men's soccer tournament final Sunday afternoon in Davidson, NC.

Moreno took a pass on the right side, knocked a shot into Paladin goalkeeper Ronnie Pascale which bounced up, and then connected on a diving header to score for the Spartans.  UNCG kept the pressure on and the Paladins also had several offensive thrusts, but neither team could score again.

Until that point, the game had been a hotly contested affair.  Furman had several chances in the first half, including a shot from the left side that ricocheted off the crossbar and a missed penalty kick to the lower left by Graham Seagraves that Spartan goalie Nathan Kipp saved.  UNCG turned up the heat in the second half and had a shot bounce off the crossbar as well.

UNCG outshot Furman 16-8, with Furman holding a 7-3 edge in corner kicks. Kipp had three saves, while Pascale had eight.

UNCG, who tied with Furman for the Southern Conference regular season title, improves to 17-3-2 overall and will travel to the University of South Alabama  next weekend for an NCAA play-in game.  Furman falls to 16-4-2 on the season.
