Paladins Edge UNCG In Crucial SoCon Match

GREENVILLE, SC -- The Furman men's soccer team defeated Southern Conference rival UNC Greensboro 4-3 as Andy Foy knocked in the game-winner with 15 minutes to play Wednesday at Eugene Stone Soccer Stadium.

In one of the most exciting matches ever at Eugene Stone Stadium, the 17th ranked Paladins remain unbeaten and improve to 6-0-1 on the season.

UNCG's Siggy Eyjolffsson opened the scoring with a penalty kick in the game's 12th minute. Furman freshman Vaughn Bethell evened the score for the Paladins with a header off an indirect kick from Paul Leese and Stephen Rodriguez. Just eight minutes later, Rodriguez put the Paladins on top with a goal off assists from John Barry Nusum and Graham Seagraves.

UNCG evened the score at the 32:17 mark in the first half as David Moore nailed a curving shot into the upper corner of the goal. Furman defender Graham Seagraves answered just three minutes later with a goal off a Seth Marks corner to put Furman on top 3-2 at the half.

After 25 minutes of scoreless play, UNCGÕs Matt Farris evened the score again at 3-3 on a direct kick, only to see Foy score the game-winner just five minutes later.

"I am incredibly thrilled for Any Foy," Furman head coach Doug Allison said. "He has worked so hard for three years and it certainly paid off tonight. This was a great win of our team."

With the loss, UNC Greensboro falls to 3-2-1. The Paladins are now 2-0 in the conference and remain unbeaten overall.
