Paladins Win Season Opener With UAB

GREENVILLE, SC -- Junior transfer Ryan Conway scored early in the first half as the 16th ranked Furman men's soccer team won its 1998 opener in a hard-fought 1-0 match against UAB Tuesday at Eugene Stone Soccer Stadium.

Conway, a transfer from Clemson, connected on an indirect kick from 25 yards out in the eighth minute of the match off a touch by Stephen Rodriguez.

UAB played the Paladins tough in a physical, emotion match that witnessed three yellow cards and a combined 26 fouls. The Blazers outshot the Paladins 10-9.

"This was a good way to open the season," said Furman head coach Doug Allison. "It was a good win over a very talented UAB squad. We are on the right track, but will have to continue to improve if we want to stay unbeaten after this weekend."

The Paladins are traveling to Columbus, Ohio this weekend for the 1998 Nike Collegiate Classic where they will face two very tough opponents in Bowling Green and Ohio State.

Furman is currently ranked 16th in the nation according to Soccer America and is 19th in Soccer News' preseason poll.
