GREENVILLE, SC -- Daniel Alvarez recorded a goal and an assist as Furman defeated Southern Conference foe College of Charleston 4-1 Wednesday at Eugene Stone Stadium. Alvarez, a junior from Fayetteville, N.C., scored the game's first goal in the 26th minute as he beat several Cougars down the left side of the field for the go-ahead goal.
Furman's Stephen Rodriguez opened a scoring frenzy for the Paladins as he connected off an Alvarez assist in the opening minutes of the second half. Geno Mayes added the Paladins' third goal of a cross from Jack Handy just seven minutes later. Forward Andy Foy capped the Paladin scoring attack off with a nice shot after beating several Cougar defenders in the middle of the field.
College of Charleston ended a 383 minute shutout streak for the Paladins with a Mark Henley goal in the 83rd minute. It was the first goal the Paladins had allowed all season.
"This was a strong performance for our guys," Furman head coach Doug Allison said. "The College of Charleston is a very talented team. This was a hard faught victory."
Furman improves to 3-0-1 overall, 1-0 in the Southern Conference, while College of Charleston drops to 0-3 overall, 0-1 Southern Conference.
