Furman Blanks Appalachian State; Nusum Ties Goals, Points Record

GREENVILLE, S.C. --   Furman freshman John Barry Nusum tied the school records for points and goals in a game Sunday as the 16th-ranked Furman men's soccer team celebrated Homecoming and senior day with a 6-0 shutout of league foe Appalachian State at Eugene Stone Soccer Stadium.

Nusum connected on four goals for the Paladins and added an assist on a Jack Handy goal to tally nine points for the match, tying the record set by Sean Callaghan in 1984 and equaled by Scott Broderick in 1985.  In addition, Nusum's four goals tied a school mark that was also last matched in 1985, and gave the freshman from Devonshire, Bermuda, the first hat trick of his collegiate career.

In addition to striking often in the game, Nusum struck early, scoring his first goal just 1:28 into the contest off a pass from Andy White.  He added his second score at the 37:37 mark off a Daniel Alvarez assist, while Andy Foy scored 41:06 into the game off a double assist from Alvarez and Seth Marks to give Furman a 3-0 advantage at the break.

Less than four minutes into the second period (48:51), Nusum attacked again, heading a ball past the reach of ASU goalie Robert Black for his third goal of the day, and at the 57:18 mark received an assist when freshman Handy tallied the first goal of his career.  Nusum's fourth and final goal of the day was at 65:31 on a header that flew just over the hands of the ASU defender.

With the Southern Conference victory, the Paladins improved to 12-2-2 on the year and 5-1 in league action.  ASU dropped to 10-5 overall and 2-2 in the Southern Conference.  The Paladins are in action again on Tuesday, October 20, at The Citadel and face fourth ranked Clemson next Sunday at Clemson.
