GREENVILLE, South Carolina -- Three of the South Region's top 10 teams will visit Eugene Stone Stadium on the campus of Furman University this weekend for the 1997 Southern Conference Soccer Tournament.
Host Furman, ranked 8th in the South Region, will attempt to defend its 1996 title and capture its seventh tournament title in the last decade. Standing in the Paladins way is rival Davidson in a match scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Saturday. The Wildcats are 10-10 on the season, but have claimed impressive wins over each of the other three semifinalists.
UNC Greensboro, a league newcomer, is the 1997 regular season champion and is currently ranked 6th in the South Region. The Spartans, 13-6, will face Georgia Southern at 5:00 p.m. Saturday. Georgia Southern holds a 14-3-2 record and is ranked tenth in the region.
The conference championship match is slated for Sunday at 3:00 p.m. at Eugene Stone Stadium. Admission to both sessions are $5 for adults and $3 for students and children under 12.
