GREENVILLE, SC - Furman University senior defender Pete Santora has been selected as a member of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/Umbro First Team All-American team for the second consecutive year. Santora was also invited to participate in the 1997 Umbro Select on the Division 1 All Star team to be held in late January in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
Santora, a senior from Dunwoody, Ga., led the Paladins in scoring as a defender with seven goals and four assists for 18 points. A three-time All Southern Conference performer, Santora was the 1997 Southern Conference Player-of-the-Year.
Santora, who last year became the first Paladin to be named first team All-American, is the fourth Paladin to receive All-American status.
"This is quite an honor for Pete and our program," Furman head coach Doug Allison said. "Pete certainly deserved this award. He worked hard for four seasons and to be selected as a two-time first team All-American is incredible."
Furman finished with a 14-6 overall record this season and claimed the Southern Conference Tournament Title. In Santora's four years, the Paladins have posted a 49-25-7 overall mark and are 21-4 in the Southern Conference.
Santora is one of 16 seniors who will represent Division I in the Umbro Select against all-stars from Division II, Division III, and NAIA. The 1997 Umbro Select will be held January 29-February 1 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
