Furman Men's Soccer Defeats Wofford; Advances To Second Round of SoCon Tournament

GREENVILLE, SC -- The Furman men;s soccer team defeated Wofford 4-0 Tuesday in the first round of the Southern Conference Tournament at Eugene Stone Stadium. Senior Todd Jackson led the way with 2 goals, while senior Ryan Higginbotham recorded two assists.

Furman scored its first goal as Ryan Higginbotham passed up a shot and dished a short ball to Todd Jackson for the score 18 minutes into the match. Freshman Shaun Stone cushioned the Paladin lead with a goal off a second Higginbotham assist at the 39:56 mark. Thirty seconds later Brent Rosser scored off assists from Daniel Alvarez and Christian Balldin to give Furman the comfortable 3-0 halftime lead.

The only score of the second half came at the 81:12 mark as Jackson scored his second goal off assists from Geno Mayes and Jeremy Tirres.

WoffordÕs goalkeepers made seven saves on the match as Furman outshot the Terriers 19-2.

"It's great to get another shutout," said Furman head coach Doug Allison. "We are looking forward to the conference tournament this weekend."

With the win Furman improves to 12-4, while Wofford falls to 3-16. Furman will host Davidson Saturday at 7:00 in the second round of the conference tournament, while UNC Greensboro will face Georgia Southern at 5:00 p.m. at Eugene Stone Stadium. The conference final is slated for 3:00 p.m. Sunday.
