Furman Men's Soccer Tops VMI

GREENVILLE, SC -- The Furman men's soccer team defeated VMI 2-0 Sunday at Eugene Stone Soccer Stadium. The match began on Saturday, but was suspended in the 69th minute due to lightning with the Paladins leading 1-0. The final 20:26 was played Sunday as Furman added another goal to its lead.

Furman's Ryan Higginbotham scored the game's first goal on a penalty kick at the 37:48 mark in the first half. Furman outshot VMI 17-3 through the first 69 minutes.

Pete Santora cushioned the Paladin lead with less than a minute remianing with a header off a Brent Rosser cross. Furman outshot VMI 7-1 in the final 21 minutes of play Sunday.

"It's nice to get another win under our belt," said Furman head coach Doug Allison. "VMI played very well in this match and should be commended."

With the win Furman improves to 11-4 overall, 5-2 SoCon. VMI falls to 1-15-2, overall, 1-5-1 SoCon. The Paladins finish in a tie for second place in the conference and will receive the third seed in the conference tournament. Furman will host 6th seeded Wofford Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. and will also host the semifinals and finals this weekend. The winner of UNC Greensboro-The Citadel will face the winner of Georgia Southern-Appalachian State Saturday at 5:00 p.m., while the Furman-Wofford winner will face the Davidson-VMI winner at 7:00 p.m. The conference final is slated for Sunday at 3:00 p.m.
