Paladins Open 1997 Season With 2-0 Win over South Alabama

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The Furman men's soccer team opened the season with a 2-0 victory over South Alabama in the Umbro Kickoff Classic Friday at Eugene E. Stone III Soccer Stadium.

1996 NSCAA/Umbro All American scored the Paladin's first goal on the season with a spectacular header of a corner kick from Todd Jackson late in the first half to give Furman a 1-0 lead. It did not take long once the second half resumed for the Paladins to cushion their lead as freshman Carl Junot scored off a Graham Seagraves pass.

Furman controled most of the match, out-shooting the Jaguars 16-2. Freshman Scott Blount registered a shutout in his first-ever collegiate start for the Paladins.

"We had a solid performance today," Furman head coach Doug Allison said. "It was a good start and I am happy with the boys. We certainly have a long way to go if we are going to reach our goals."
