GREENVILLE, SC -- Daniel Alvarez scored the game-winner with 1:14 to play as Furman defeated North Carolina 2-1 Sunday at Eugene Stone Soccer Stadium. The win improves Furman's home winning streak to 16 consecutive matches dating back to early last season.
Furman freshman Carl Junot put Furman on the board midway through the second half with a header set up by a Seth Marks corner and a Daniel Alvarez header. The Paladins held their lead for the next ten minutes until Carey Talley evened the score at the 78:53 mark in the second half.
The game-winner came as Daniel Alvarez placed a ball passed a charging Tar Heel goalkeeper who was attempting to recover a Stephen Rodriguez shot.
"This was a great win over a very talented soccer team," said Furman head coach Doug Allison. "It is a great momentum builder that we can utilize in the coming week. Daniel Alvarez played great today to lead us to victory."
With the win the Paladins improve to 10-3 on the year, while North Carolina falls to 4-10. Furman will face UNC Greensboro Wednesday in Greensboro and will host Clemson next Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
