GREENVILLE, SC -- The Furman men's soccer team defeated Davidson 2-0 Saturday in the second round of the Southern Conference Tournament at Eugene Stone Stadium. Daniel Alvarez and Ryan Higginbotham each scored goals for the Paladins.
After a scoreless tie through the first half Furman scored two goals in a one minute span to capture the victory. Daniel Alvarez scored off a header from a Todd Jackson cross at the 53:21 mark. A minute later, Ryan Higginbotham added the clincher off assists from Geno Mayes and Daniel Alvarez.
Both Furman and Davidson managed eight shots on goal in a strong defensive struggle. The shutout was FurmanÕs 11th of the season.
The lone sour point for the Paladins came as forward Brent Rosser was lost with a broken leg shortly after FurmanÕs second goal.
"This was a good win for our program," said Furman head coach Doug Allison. "We are looking forward to the championship match tomorrow against UNC Greensboro."
With the win, Furman improves to 13-4, while Davidson falls to 10-11. Furman will host UNC Greensboro Sunday at 3 p.m. in the Southern Conference Championship match. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for students and children under 12.
