GREENVILLE, SC -- The 22nd ranked Furman men's soccer team shutout The Citadel 5-0 Wednesday at Eugene Stone Soccer Stadium as five different players scored for the Paladins.
Daniel Alvarez opened the scoring for Furman at the 15:25 mark as he scored on a breakaway set up by goalkeeper Ronnie Pascale. Pascale, who netted his sixth shutout of the season recorded his first career assist on the play. Todd Jackson nailed Furman's second goal of the match off an Alvarez assist. Furman entered the half with a 3-0 lead after freshman Shaun Stone scored with 35 seconds remaining off assists from Seth Marks and Pete Santora.
Freshman Andy Foy and Sophomomre Stephen Rodriguez added goals for the Paladins in the second half as they finished with the 5-0 victory. The Paladins outshot the Bulldogs 27-6.
"It is nice to be 4-1 in the conference," said Furman head coach Doug Allison. "The Citadel played well today, they made us hard work for our goals. We have a tough stretch coming up and we will have to continue to step up our level of play."
The Paladins improve to 9-3 on the year, 4-1 in the Southern Conference. The Citadel falls to 3-9-1, 1-3 SoCon with the loss. Furman is entering a three match stretch that includes North Carolina, UNC Greensboro, and Clemson. The Paladins host the Tar Heels at Eugene Stone Stadium this Sunday at 2:00.
