King, Gibson win top prizes in Pro-Am Pepper pulls out due to illness

GREENVILLE, South Carolina - Due to a severe sinus infection Furman alumnae Dottie Pepper withdrew from the Belk Simpson/Furman Pro-Am and the upcoming Chick Fil-A Charity Tournament in Atlanta, Ga., but four LPGA Hall of Famers and 31 other professional golfers were on hand for Monday's event at the Furman University Golf Course.

Betsy King's team comprised of Frank Dixon, John Crook, Tom Crain, and Rick Siliakus won in the gross score category with a 54, while Ellie Gibson's team of Mark Sauer, James Ukrop, Ted Ukrop, and Jeff Ukrop took the net score honors with a 25-under-par 47. The winning gross team won Maxfli irons, while the winning net team received laser putters and an Arnold Palmer Titanium Driver. Awards were given to the top seven net scores and the top three gross finishers.

On a related note, Furman announced plans on Monday to install a bronze plaque honoring King and former alumnus Beth Daniel for establishing the annual Pro-Am and for their dedication to the Furman golf teams. The plaque will be placed on the golf course, between the ninth green and the 10th tee.
