FURMAN WINS SOUTHERN CONFERENCE TITLE BY 32;
JOHNSTON TAKES MEDALIST HONORS

GREENSBORO, North Carolina -- Furman’s Lady Paladin golf team fired a final round 299 to win its 10th Southern Conference golf title by 32 strokes over the Western Carolina Catamounts. In addition, senior Sarah Johnston won her first collegiate individual title on the first hole of a playoff with teammate Jenny Suh.

Furman entered the final round with a 14 stroke cushion and outshot the Catamounts 299-317 at the par 71 Starmount Country Club to extend its winning margin. In addition to Johnston’s final round 73 Suh carded a 73, freshman Theresa Paik fired 75 and Tiarna Harman shot 78. Sophomore Haley Gildea was the Furman non-counter following a third-round 81.

Tied after 54 holes, Suh and Johnston began a sudden-death playoff on the 18th hole and Johnston responded with a birdie to earn the individual victory. Four of five Lady Paladins ended the tournament in the top 20 - Johnston in first, Suh in second, Paik in fourth, and Harman in 17th.

With the victory the Lady Paladins earn the Southern Conference NCAA Tournament automatic bid, and will participate in NCAA Regionals May 6-8.
