FURMAN IN LEAD BY THREE AT SOCON CHAMPIONSHIPS

NORTH CHARLESTON, South Carolina -- Furman's Lady Paladin golf team fired a second-round 299 to hold a three-stroke lead (597 to 600) entering the third and final round of the Southern Conference Women's Golf Championships.

Furman was paced for the second consecutive day by Brandi Jackson, who fired a 72 at the 5,940-yard, par 72 Wescott Plantation in North Charleston. Sarah Johnston added a 74 to the Furman cause, while Jennifer Perri carded a 75 and Cimmie Shahan shot 78. Senior Leigh Turner was disqualified from the round.

The Spartans of UNCG followed up their first-round 299 with a 301 and are in second place, with the Appalchian State Mountaineers in third at 618. Furman's Jackson leads the medalist hunt with a two-day 142, while ASU's Jennifer Monko is second at 147, East Tennessee State's Mimmie Dymling is third at 149, and a pair of UNCG players are tied for fourth at 150 and sixth at 152.

The final round of the 2002 Southern Conference Women's Golf Championship is slated for Monday.
