PALADINS, SCURLOCK, IN LEAD AT ADAMS CUP

NEWPORT, Rhode Island -- The Furman Paladin golf team and junior Brian Scurlock lead both the team and individual standings after two rounds of competition at the Adams Cup of Newport in Newport, R.I.

Scurlock, a junior from Augusta, Ga., fired 74-69 for a two-round 143 at the 6,458 yard, par 70, Newport Country Club, and is in first place individually, holding a one-stroke lead over teammate Jay Mundy. Mundy, a freshman also from Augusta, carded 74-70 and is at 144.

Another Furman freshman, Buddy Davis, carded 74-80 on Tuesday and is in 21st with a 154 total, while sophomore Kirk Satterfield shot 78-77 and is 24th with a 155. Matt Davidson, a freshman from West Windson, N.J., rounded out the Furman team with scores of 81-77 and is in 35th.

Though his scores do not count toward the team total, junior Tom Wyatt, playing as an individual, carded 80-77 and is tied for 31st with a 157.

As a team, the Paladins fired 300-293 and total 593 for an 11-stroke lead over Virginia Commonwealth, which sits in second. Toledo is third at 606, with Rhode Island fourth at 608 and Michigan State fifth at 609.

The final round of the Adams Cup will conclude Thursday with final round action at the 6,447-yard, par 69 Point Judith Country Club.
