VIRGINIA TAKES FURMAN INTERCOLLEGIATE CROWN

MARYLAND'S UNIKEL WINS INDIVIDUAL TITLE IN PLAYOFF

GREENVILLE, South Carolina -- The University of Virginia fired a final-round 294 to defeat the Bucs of East Tennessee State by two and earn the Cavalier's second Furman Intercollegiate Title with an 876 three-round total. In the individual race, Maryland's Keith Unikel topped Virginia's James Driscoll on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff, to give the Terrapins their second consecutive medalist award at the Intercollegiate.

ETSU and Virginia entered the third round tied atop the leaderboard with a 582 tally, but the Cavs' counted scored of 71, 72, 75, and 76, while ETSU, which was competing with only four players, scored 71, 74, 75, and 76. The victory was Virginia's first in the Furman Intercollegiate since 1995. The Terps of Maryland matched the Bucs with a 296 to remain in third by three strokes. The Eagles of Georgia Southern posted the low round of the day, with a two-under 286 and moved into fourth, while the Paladins 293 put them sixth overall.

UVA's Driscoll attempted to give the Cavs a sweep of the Intercollegiate, and entered the final round with a three stroke cushion over Unikel. Unikel carded a final round 68, however, to force the playoff, and parred the first hole for the win. Driscoll left his approach shot just short of the green and three putted for bogey. It was the second year in a row a Maryland golfer won the Furman Intercollegiate in a playoff situation. Last year, Miguel Rivera took Mississippi State's Richard Barbles to three holes before taking honors.

The host Paladins of Furman took sixth, while the Furman "B" team placed eighth. Freshman Buddy Davis, who was playing for Furman's "B" team was the top Paladin finisher, taking fourth individually with a one-under 215 total. The Furman team's top finisher was Kirk Satterfield, who fired 74-73-75 and placed 16th individually.
