FURMAN GOLFERS FINISH TIED FOR FIFTH AT MID PINES INTERCOLLEGIATE

SOUTHERN PINES, North Carolina - The Furman men's golf team opened the 2003-04 season with a fifth place finish in the 14-team Mid Pines Intercollegiate in Southern Pines, N.C., on Tuesday.

Furman carded rounds of 280-292-287 to tie the Wofford Terriers for fifth, 27 strokes off the lead pace set by the University of California.

The Paladins were led by senior Matt Davidson (West Windsor, N.J.) who shot 69-70-74 to finish 13th at three-under 213 for the tournament. Also tied for 13th was junior Rob Langley (Atlanta, Ga.), who fired three consecutive 71s at the 6,528-yard, par 72 Mid Pines Golf Course. Senior Buddy Davis took 19th after rounds of 70-74-70 left him at two-under for the tournament, and Noble Judy, a senior from Nashville, Tenn., shot a two-under 70 in the first round, only to fire 77-77 to end the tournament in 49th at 224. Furman's final finisher was junior Shane Birckbichler (Greenville, S.C.) who recorded rounds of 77-73-76 to finish 58th at 226.

Furman continues its fall slate September 22-23 at the Mason Rudolph Championships in Nashville, Tenn.
