FURMAN GOLF TO HOST 34TH ANNUAL FURMAN INTERCOLLEGIATE
THIS FRIDAY-SUNDAY, MARCH 21-23, AT FURMAN GOLF COURSE

GREENVILLE, South Carolina -- The 34th annual Furman Intercollegiate, one of the oldest competitions in Division I golf, will be contested this Friday through Sunday, March 21-23, at the 6,800-yard, par 72 Furman University Golf Course.

The Hokies of Virginia Tech will be gunning for their third consecutive team title, a feat never before accomplished in the Intercollegiate. Georgia Southern University was the first team to win back-to-back Furman Intercollegiates, doing so in 1971 and '72 during the competition's second and third year. Since then Wake Forest ('73, '74 and '84,'85), Florida ('78, '79), Tennessee ('81, '82), Georgia ('88, '89) and Clemson ('92, '93) have all won two in row before coming up short in their quests for a three-peat.

Furmanšs last team victory was in the 1986 Intercollegiate, when Jack Kay set the individual tournament record with a 13-under par 203 for three rounds. Kirk Satterfield was the last Paladin to win medalist honors, doing so in 2001, with an eight-under 208.

In addition to the Hokies of the Big East conference, the 2003 field features Southern Conference contenders Appalachian State, The Citadel, Davidson, UNC Greensboro, Chattanooga, Western Carolina, and Wofford. Marshall represents the MAC, Virginia will be on hand from the ACC, Purdue is from the Big Ten, and Memphis carries the torch for Conference USA, while a number of other teams from as far west as Texas-Pan American will also be competing.

Tee times in the annual Intercollegiate will begin at 8 a.m. all three days, with teams starting off both the first and 10th tees.
