SATTERFIELD HAS UPS AND DOWNS IN FIRST ROUND 76

DURHAM, North Carolina -- The usually steady Kirk Satterfield carded four bogeys and two double bogeys in the first round of the NCAA Division I Golf Championship on Wednesday, but paired that with four birdies to card a four over par 76 at the Duke Golf Club.

Satterfield, a junior from Bluefield, W.Va., is in 96th individually in the field of 156. Furman's first individual NCAA qualifier since 1989, Satterfield began his round with bogeys on one and two, then added another on the par four fifth to go to three over. On the sixth hole, Satterfield carded a birdie three to regain control, then moved to plus one with another birdie on the par five ninth. The backside proved troublesome however, as Satterfield bogeyed the 10th then doubled the 13th and 17th holes with a pair of sixes. Birdies on the par five 14th and par four 16th enabled Satterfield to stay within 10 strokes of the leaders: Kris Mikkelsen of Georgia Tech and Chris Nallen of Arizona.

Round two of the NCAA Championships is slated for Thursday. Satterfield will tee off the 10th hole at 8:48 a.m.
