PALADIN GOLF TEAM 14TH AFTER FIRST ROUND OF MATLOCK INVITATIONAL

LAKELAND, Florida -- Furman's Paladin golf team opened the 2001 spring season Monday with a first round 321 in blustery conditions at the Matlock Invitational in Lakeland, Fla. Furman is 14th heading into the second round, 23 strokes off the pace set by Stanford University, which holds first by two strokes.

Buddy Davis and Kirk Satterfield were the only Paladin team members to shoot in the 70s Monday. Both carded 79s and are tied for 33rd individually. Senior Brian Scurlock fired an 80 and is in 47th, while Vance Embry is in 72nd with a first-round 83 and Noble Judy is in 85th after carding an 88.

Round two of the Matlock Invitational was begun on Monday, but did not finish when windy conditions slowed play. Round two is slated to finish Tuesday morning, with the third and final round beginning immediately thereafter.
