FURMAN FALLS INTO THIRD AT SOCON GOLF CHAMPIONSHIPS

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.---East Tennessee State's men's golf team had four players fire scores of par or better Saturday in the second round of the Southern Conference Men's Golf Championships to bolt the Buccaneers from third to first place. Pat Beste, James Johnson, Chris Wisler and Thomas Lee all got around the 6,392-yard, par-70 Chattanooga Golf and Country Club Course in 70 or better.

The Bucs, who had a team score of 287 after the first round, improved 12 strokes Saturday for a five-under-par 275 and an aggregate 562. ETSU, the defending SoCon Champion, leads the College of Charleston (573) by 11 strokes and Furman (574) by 12. The Paladins were the round-one leaders at 283.

Beste, last year's individual champion, had the low round of the day, a three-under 67. He is one of three players under par after two rounds and stands second with a three-under 137. Appalachian State's Matt Riddick carded his second consecutive 68 and leads the field at four-under 136. Wofford's William McGirt is third at two-under 138. ETSU's Johnson and Wisler are tied for fourth and seventh respectively after second-round 69s, while Lee is also tied for seventh after Saturday's 70. UNC Greensboro's Andy Crain and Charleston's Bruce McDonald are also tied for fourth at one-over 141.
