FURMAN LEADS SOCON GOLF CHAMPIONSHIPS BY THREE STROKES

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.---The Furman men's golf team had three players finish in the top 10 in Friday's first round of the Southern Conference Golf Championships to allow the Paladins to grab a first-round lead in the team standings. Furman's team total of three-over-par 283 is three strokes better than the College of Charleston (286) and four ahead of defending champion East Tennessee State (287).

Furman's Kirk Satterfield was one of only five individuals to shoot a round under par at the 6,392-yard, par-70 Chattanooga Golf and Country Club. Satterfield, Charleston's Jedd McLuen and Wofford's Jon Stephenson carded one-under 69s. Wofford's William McGirt and Appalachian State's Matt Riddick had the low round of the day with two-under 68s. McGirt is last year's conference runner-up, while Riddick fired his lowest score of the season.

Noble Judy and David Sligh joined a fivesome with 71s to add to Furman's score. ETSU's Pat Beste, the 2000 individual medallist, is two shots back of the lead after an even-par 70.

Saturday's second round begins at 12:20 p.m. while Sunday's final round starts at 8 a.m.
