FURMANšS CAM NEWTON NAMED SOCON
DEFENSIVE PLAYER-OF-THE-WEEK

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Furman Paladins free safety Cam Newton has been named Southern Conference Defensive Player-of-the-Week for his play in the Paladins' 24-7 league win over Elon on Saturday.

Newton, a junior from Bennettsville, S.C., tallied seven tackles, an interception, and a forced fumble to highlight a Furman defensive effort that limited Elon to 231 total yards and only one first down and 56 yards in the second half. His fumble recovery halted a Phoenix scoring threat the Furman 2-yard line.

A second team All-Southern Conference choice in 2002, he tallied 57 tackles and a team leading six interceptions a year ago in helping Furman to an 8-4 record and fourth straight NCAA I-AA playoff appearance.

Furman takes on Clemson this Saturday in a 5:00 p.m. game televised by Charter cable channel 10 in Greenville.
