FORMER FURMAN STANDOUT LUTHER BROUGHTON
SIGNS WITH GREEN BAY PACKERS

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The Green Bay Packers have signed former Furman standout tight end Luther Broughton, the club announced late Sunday.

A product of Huger, S.C., and fifth-round pick of he Philadelphia Eagles in the 1997 NFL Draft, Broughton spent the 1998 season with the Carolina Panthers before being traded back to Philadelphia, where in 1999 and 2000 he caught 38 passes for 399 yards and four touchdowns. He spent the 2001 season with the Panthers and was cut by the Chicago Bears prior to the start of the 2002 campaign.

At Furman he earned All-Southern Conference honors three times and was a second team All-America selection in 1996. He ranks second on Furman's career receptions ledger with 123 catches.

With Broughton's signing, Furman now has four graduates currently in NFL training camps, including linebacker Orlando Ruff '99 (New Orleans Saints), safety John Keith '00 (San Francisco 49ers), and wide receiver Desmond Kitchings '00 (St. Louis Rams).

Broughton will be in uniform (No. 49) Monday night when the Packers take on the Kansas City Chiefs in NFL preseason action.
