FURMAN FOOTBALL SIGNS 14 TO NATIONAL LETTERS-OF-INTENT
GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Furman head football coach Bobby Lamb announced today the signing of 14 recruits to national letters of intent.
"This is the day every coach in America says they're pleased with their recruiting effort and that they've addressed their needs," quipped Lamb early Wednesday afternoon. "Seriously, it will probably be a year or two before we can begin to gauge the impact this class will have, but right now we're very happy, and I'd like to compliment our coaching staff for a job well done."
When counting junior quarterback Ingle Martin, who transferred into the Furman program in early January following three seasons at the University of Florida, the Paladins' 2004 recruiting class includes 15 players.
The 14 high school seniors who signed with Furman on Wednesday include nine defensive additions and five prep offensive standouts. Defensively, Furman inked four linebackers, a pair of defensive ends, two cornerbacks, and one lineman. On offense, the Paladins signed a pair of linemen, two fullbacks, and a quarterback.
"We had four linebackers on our board that we targeted and we went in only planning to take two, but all four really wanted to be Paladins so we decided to take all of them," said Lamb. "We never want to pass on good linebacker prospects."
The Paladins' recruiting class features two Palmetto products, including offensive tackle Joel Bell (Spartanburg/Spartanburg H.S.) and linebacker Paul White (Yemasse/Battery Creek H.S.). White, who graduated from Battery Creek in December, will enroll at Furman in March in time for spring practice.
Furman registered its biggest yield in Georgia, where it landed nine recruits. They include AAA consensus all-state center David Menocal (Gainesville/Gainesville H.S.), a participant in the Georgia North-South All-Star Game, cornerback Masharn Austin (Lawrenceville, Ga./Buford H.S.), who helped his team to a 15-0 record and state AA championship in 2003, and cornerback William Middleton (Atlanta, Ga./Marist H.S.), a standout on Marist's 14-1 state AAAA title squad last fall. In addition the Paladins signed linebackers Keith Boykins (Fayetteville, Ga./Lovejoy H.S.) and Brandon Williams (Tucker, Ga./Lakeside H.S.), defensive ends Jay Jay Mars (Stone Mountain, Ga./Dunwoody H.S.), Hugh Williamson (Monroe, Ga./George Walton Academy), fullback Brantley Kendall (Senoia, Ga./East Coweta H.S.), and quarterback Arthur Williams (Monroe, Ga./George Walton Academy).
Furman also inked defensive lineman Essex Taylor (Stokesdale, N.C./Northwest Guilford H.S.), linebacker Andrew Jones (Birmingham, Ala./Minor H.S.), and fullback Jerome Felton (Madisonville, Tenn./Sequoyah H.S.).
Furman, which opens spring practice on March 8, returns 20 starters off its 2003 squad, which posted a 6-5 record and led the Southern Conference in scoring defense (14.1 ppg), total defense (272.5 ypg), passing defense (132.5 ypg), and passing efficiency defense (97.5 rating).
