FURMAN'S MAYS TO UNDERGO SURGERY WEDNESDAY

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Furman head football coach Bobby Lamb announced today that redshirt freshman tailback Brandon Mays will undergo surgery on Wednesday at Greenville's Saint Francis Hospital for ulcerative colitis.

Mays, a former standout at T.C. Roberson High School in Arden, N.C., has been hospitalized for the past six days after being diagnosed with the condition in late September.

"The thoughts and prayers of our entire program are with Brandon and his family. We hope the surgery is successful and certainly wish for him a speedy recovery," said Lamb late Monday afternoon.

Mays saw reserve action in the first four games of the 2002 season, rushing 18 times for 96 yards while also working on special teams. His last action came in Furman's 55-28 win over VMI on Sept. 28.
