FURMAN FOOTBALL TO WELCOME
21 FRESHMEN TO CAMPUS WEDNESDAY

GREENVILLE -- Furman will welcome 21 freshman football players to campus on Wednesday in preparation for preseason camp, which gets underway Thursday with two practices in shorts and helmets.

"This is an exciting time for everybody involved in our program and especially for these young players," said Furman head coach Bobby Lamb, who is entering his first season at the helm of the Paladin program.

The Paladin newcomers are expected to report and be fitted with equipment between 1:00-3:00 p.m., and will later undergo physicals at 7:15 p.m.

On Thursday morning the Furman freshmen will undergo strength training evaluation at 8:00 a.m. and meetings at 9:00 prior to the squadıs first practice, which is scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m. The first-year Paladins will practice a second time on Thursday beginning at 3:30 p.m.

Furman's returning veterans are scheduled to report on Friday between 3:00-5:00 p.m. The first full squad practice is scheduled for Sunday at 3:30 p.m. All Furman practices are open to the public.

Furman, which returns 11 starters off last yearıs 12-3 team that claimed a share of the Southern Conference championship and finished as NCAA I-AA runner-up, is ranked seventh in the Sports Network Preseason I-AA College Football Poll. Furman opens its 2002 season at Vanderbilt on Sept. 7.

Paladin Pointers: Furman head coach Bobby Lamb said that redshirt freshman offensive tackle David Wright informed him on Tuesday that he was quitting football but would remain in school. A walk-on from Blacksburg, S.C., Wright was listed third on the depth chart at right tackle behind returning senior starter Steven Cain and redshirt freshman Brian Laggis.
