MALE ATHLETE-OF-THE-YEAR HONORS

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- All-Americans Will Bouton and John Barry Nusum were honored as co-recipients of the 2001-02 Furman University Male Athlete-of-the-Year Award Tuesday night at the school's annual men's athletic banquet.

Bouton, a two-time All-America selection and Greenville native, starred as a linebacker in Furman's football program, helping the Paladins to a pair of league championships in his four seasons, including a 12-3, NCAA I-AA national runnerup finish in 2001. He recently signed a free agent contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Nusum, meanwhile, earned All-America honors three times as a soccer forward and was one of three finalists for the 2001 Hermann Trophy, which is awarded annually to college soccer¹s national player-of-the-year. In his four-year Paladin career, the Bermuda native tallied a school record 61 goals and paced Furman to four conference titles and three NCAA Tournament appearances.

Senior tennis player Peter Netzler was honored as the Male Academic Achievement Award recipient.
