FURMAN'S SCHROEDER OUT FOR
SEASON WITH KNEE INJURY

GREENVILLE -- Furman redshirt freshman tight end Stephen Schroeder will miss the entire 2001 season after sustaining a torn anterior cruciate ligament last Friday, head athletic trainer Brian Reese announced today.

Schroeder, a 6-foot-3, 255-pound former standout at nearby Mauldin (S.C.) High School, will undergo surgery within the next couple of weeks, according to Reese.

Schroeder was among a number of candidates vying for a position on the Paladin varsity as a backup to returning All-Southern Conference tight end Trent Sansbury. He spent much of the 2000 season working as defensive tackle before being moved to tight end in the spring.

Furman continues its twice daily practice schedule on Wednesday with sessions at 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. The Paladins return 19 starters off a 2000 squad that posted a 9-3 record. Furman was ranked No. 6 in the Sports Network NCAA I-AA Preseason Football Poll, which was released on Monday.
