FIRST,
FURMAN SECOND IN PRE-SEASON POLL
ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- Georgia Southern, the defending NCAA Division I-AA National Champion, has been picked to win the Southern Conference football race this fall and defending league tri-champion Furman finished second in a vote by the media members that cover the league.
Georgia Southern received 26 first place votes from the 36 voters and tallied 312 points. Furman, which posted a 9-3 record a year ago, including a 28-3 win over North Carolina, was picked to finish second with 275 points. Appalachian State, which fell to the Paladins 35-21 last year, was a close third with 274 points. Appalachian State received six first place votes to Furman's four.
Rounding out the poll is Wofford in fourth place followed by Chattanooga, East Tennessee State, Western Carolina, The Citadel and VMI. The complete poll follows:
