DANIEL HIGHLIGHT SIX FURMAN ATHLETIC HALL-OF-FAME INDUCTEES

GREENVILLE ‹ Former soccer standout Scott Broderick '88 of Greenville, football All-American Allen Edwards '93 of Spartanburg, and basketball great Mel Daniel '82 of Saluda are among seven athletes who will be inducted into the Furman University Athletic Hall-of-Fame in ceremonies prior to Furman's football game against William & Mary on Sept. 16, it was announced today by Paladin Club director Gary Clark.

Also selected for induction are Caroline Peek Blaylock '95 (women's golf), Jack Kay '86 (men's golf), and Brent Williams '91 (baseball).

Tickets to this year's dinner and induction ceremony, which begin at 5:00 p.m. at Timmons Arena, are $10 and can be purchased by calling the Paladin Club (864) 294-3469.

Broderick, a graduate of Greenville's Eastside High School and 1988 GTE Academic All-America selection, earned All-Southern Conference accolades three times and tallied 44 goals and 16 assists in his career. Furman's second all-time leading scorer, he helped the Paladins compile a 47-19-4 record and claim three conference soccer championships during his four-year career. Included in that span were wins over both Clemson and South Carolina during the 1987 season.

A three-time All-Southern Conference pick and 1991 Associated Press All-America selection as a nose guard, Edwards, a graduate of Spartanburg High School, started as a freshman on Furman's 1988 NCAA I-AA national championship football team that posted a school best 13-2 record and led the nation in scoring defense (9.5 ppg). He helped the Paladins capture conference titles in 1988, '89, and '90, and in 1991 garnered league defensive player-of-the-year and Associated Press All-America honors. The Paladins compiled a 41-12 during Edwards' career.

Daniel starred for Furman basketball and was a three-time All-Southern Conference honoree. He paced the Paladins to a school best 23-7 record and to league regular season and tournament championships in 1980. In 1981 he led the conference in scoring (22.0 ppg) and later that year helped the United States capture a gold medal at the World University Games. Ranked seventh on Furman's career scoring chart with 1,707 points, the former Saluda High School standout and younger brother of 1996 Furman Hall-of-Fame inductee Al Daniel, stands fourth all-time in free throw percentage (80.0%), assists (379) and steals (144) and was selected by the New Jersey Nets in the 1982 NBA Draft.
