FURMAN ANNOUNCES 2001 FOOTBALL SCHEDULE;
PALADINS TO OPEN AT WYOMING

GREENVILLE -- A season opening game against Wyoming highlights Furman's 2001 football schedule, which was released today by director of athletics Gary Clark.

Furman's 11-game schedule includes five home games and six away contests.

Furman will open the 2001 season on Sept. 1 at NCAA Division I foe Wyoming and will kick off its home season on Sept. 8 against I-AA independent Elon, marking the third consecutive year the Phoenix has been on the Paladins' schedule.

A road game against I-AA independent Liberty is scheduled for Sept. 15. In February Furman had agreed to play at Jacksonville State on Sept. 15, but JSU officials backed out of the arrangement in order to schedule a game against Tennessee Tech, leaving Furman with only 10 games. Furman then completed its 11-game schedule with a road game against Liberty.

The Paladins kick off their Southern Conference schedule on Sept. 22 against VMI in Greenville before hitting the road for their first league away contest against Western Carolina on Sept. 29.

Other home games include Oct. 6 versus Appalachian State, Oct. 20 against East Tennessee State, and Nov. 10 versus Wofford. The rest of Furman's schedule includes road games against conference foes The Citadel on Oct. 13, defending national champion Georgia Southern on Nov. 3, and Chattanooga on Nov. 17.

Furman returns 19 starters, including Walter Payton Award winning tailback Louis Ivory, off last year's team that posted a 9-3 record and finished the regular season ranked fourth in the Sports Network I-AA poll.
