BOTCHED FIELD GOAL SNAP AND TOUCHDOWN EARNS
FURMAN NATION'S MOST UNUSUAL PLAY HONOR

GREENVILLE -- A botched field goal snap that led to a touchdown pass in Furman's 31-17 win over The Citadel on Saturday has been named Compaq College Football's "Most Unusual" Play-of-the-Week, it was announced today.

The award winning play occurred early in the fourth quarter on a 23-yard field goal attempt and Furman holding a 24-14 lead. The snap from center Brad Byars sailed through the hands of Paladin holder Brent Scoggins but was picked up by senior placekicker Jason Wells, who scrambled left, then right. Pursued by The Citadel's Steve Notery and Britt Gardner , Wells threw an off balance pass toward the end zone, where it bounced off the hands of a pair of Citadel defenders into the hands of Furman's Patrick Garner for a 6-yard touchdown pass, putting the Paladins ahead 31-14.

"It took a lot of guts to make that call," Furman head coach Bobby Johnson jokingly said on Wednesday. "We worked all week on getting the tip down. The execution was flawless."
