FURMAN'S NAPIER NAMED SOUTHERN
CONFERENCE FRESHMAN-OF-THE-WEEK

GREENVILLE -- Furman University quarterback Billy Napier has been named Southern Conference Freshman-of-the-Week for his outstanding play in the Paladins' 58-0 rout of VMI Saturday in Greenville.

Napier, a redshirt freshman from Chatsworth, Ga., completed 8-of-13 passes for 108 yards and also rushed nine times for 28 yards in helping Furman to its most decisive Southern Conference win in school history and first shutout since the Paladins blanked Wofford 38-0 in 1995.

"One of the good things about a football game like we had Saturday was we got several of our younger players plenty of work, and it's important that your backup quarterback get as much work as possible," said head coach Bobby Johnson. "We did just that, and Billy responded with a solid performance."

Napier's league player-of-the-week selection is the second for Furman this season. Last week Paladin sophomore linebacker Will Bouton garnered conference defensive player-of-the-week honors for his work in Furman's 52-6 win over William & Mary.

Furman returns to action this Saturday against Southern Conference foe Western Carolina in Cullowhee, N.C. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
