FURMAN'S KEITH AMONG 16 FINALISTS
FOR BUCK BUCHANAN AWARD

GREENVILLE -- The Sports Network announced today that Furman University senior free safety John Keith is among 16 finalists for the 1999 Buck Buchanan Award, which is presented annually to the most outstanding defensive player in the NCAA I-AA football.

A three-year starter, Keith was selected by Southern Conference head coaches as the league's pre-season defensive player-of-the-year. Through nine games, the Newnan, Ga., product has registered 87 tackles, four tackles-for-loss, three interceptions, and four pass deflections in helping Furman to its current 7-2 record and No. 9 ranking in NCAA I-AA polls. Included in the Paladins' season is a 28-3 win over North Carolina.

"I think John has earned the right to be considered one of the best defensive players in the country," said Furman head coach Bobby Johnson on Thursday. "His performance this year, and in particular the role he has played in our team's success, have certainly added to his reputation as a quality player worthy on national recognition."

Keith has racked up 275 tackles and 11 interceptions in his career, including a school record 99-yard interception return in Furman's 43-21 win over Chattanooga in 1997.

Buck Buchanan played collegiately at Grambling State University and in 1962 became the first player from a small black college to be selected in the first round of the NFL draft. He went on to play 13 seasons for the Dallas Texans and Kansas City Chiefs organizations.

This year marks the fifth season the Sports Network has presented the Buchanan Award. The winner will be announced Dec. 6 at Mickey Mantle's Restaurant in New York City.
