HIGHLIGHT 10 FURMAN ATHLETIC HALL-OF-FAME INDUCTEES

GREENVILLE -- Former football standouts David Charpia '84 of Greenville, Gene Reeder '86 of Woodruff, and Jerome Norris '87 of Anderson are among 10 greats who will be inducted into the Furman University Athletic Hall-of-Fame in ceremonies prior to Furman's football game against VMI on Sept. 25, it was announced today by Paladin Club director Gary Clark.

Also selected for induction are Rushia Brown '94 (women's basketball), Bill Dimitriouleas '73 (track & field), Cathy Fronheiser '94 (softball), Bruce Gheesling '82 (football), Russ Hunt '73 (men's basketball), and Janey Strause-McKenna '87 (women's tennis). In addition, Greenville native Forrest Wakefield '36 will be enshrined as an honorary member of the Furman Athletic Hall-of-Fame.

Tickets to this year's induction ceremony, which begins at 5:00 p.m., are $8 and can be purchased by calling the Paladin Club (864) 294-3469.

Charpia, a product of Greenville's Eastside High School, was the starting quarterback on a pair of Southern Conference championship teams in 1982 and '83 that also posted wins over South Carolina (28-23) and Georgia Tech (17-14). A two-time all-conference selection, he ranks as Furman's sixth all-time leading passer with 3,591 yards and 22 touchdowns.

A three-year starter at center and member of three league championship teams, Reeder garnered Southern Conference Jacobs Blocking Award and All-America honors in 1985 after helping pace the Paladins to a 12-2 record and NCAA I-AA national runner-up finish that included a win over North Carolina State (42-20). The Woodruff (S.C.) High School native also starred in track at Furman, winning a conference championship in the discus in 1983.

Norris, a two-time All-Southern Conference selection as a defensive back and member of three league championship teams, still ranks as Furman's career interceptions leader (18). He starred on Paladin squads that posted back-to-back wins over North Carolina State in 1984 and '85, and in 1985 and '86 he helped Furman combine for a league high 58 interceptions. The Crescent (S.C.) High School product also excelled in track at Furman and still shares ‹ with three others ‹ the school record in the 1600m relay (3:15.70).
