PALADINS UNDERGO PAIR OF "TOUGH, PHYSICAL"
PRACTICES IN PREPARATION FOR SATURDAY SCRIMMAGE

GREENVILLE -- The Furman Paladins prepared for Saturday's scrimmage in Paladin Stadium with a pair of physical practices Friday afternoon that included a variety of situational work.

"Even though we're going to scrimmage tomorrow, we had two very tough, physical practices today with a lot of good effort," said head coach Bobby Johnson. "They came out and did what we asked them to do, and I think that's going to pay off for us.

"We got into some of the things that help you win football games, such as short yardage situations and two minute drills. Those are things that you have to do well to win close games, and that's what we had trouble doing last year -- winning the close ones -- so we're trying to address that now and get better."

One player who drew Johnson's praise was senior flanker Desmond Kitchings (Wagner, S.C.), Furman's leading returning receiver who caught 35 passes for 560 yards and three touchdowns in 1998.

"I think the whole week Des Kitchings has been really consistent. He's caught everything and has made some spectacular catches. With his speed, he puts a lot of fear into our defense; I just hope he puts that same fear into other defenses this year."

Nose guard Jarrod Holmes (hamstring strain) and Ryan Bussard (sore shoulder), defensive end Peter Kamm (sprained ankle), and junior flanker Bryant Huguley (bruised hand) did not take part in Friday's workouts and are likely to miss Saturday scrimmage.

"Right now, it doesn't look like we have anybody with anything that will keep them out any serious length of time, so we look forward to getting them back soon," Johnson added.

Furman will host Fan Day beginning at 1:30 p.m. prior to Saturday's scrimmage in Paladin Stadium. Posters, t-shirts, and scrimmage rosters will be given away, and players will be available for autographs on the field. Admission is free.
