Former J.L. Mann Head Coach George Harrleson Joins Furman Football Staff

GREENVILLE -- Furman University head football coach Bobby Johnson announced today that former J.L. Mann head football coach George Harrelson has joined the Paladin staff as an assistant coach in charge of the squad's tight ends.

"We feel fortunate to have a coach with George Harrelson's experience joining our staff, and I'm sure our program -- and our tight ends in particular -- will benefit immensely from his years as a football coach," said Johnson in making the announcement.

Prior to joining the Furman program, Harrelson served as head coach at Greenville's J.L. Mann High School for six years and compiled a 38-28 overall record before resigning following the 1997 season. During his tenure at J.L. Mann, the Patriots reached the playoffs five times and last year tied for the Peach Blossom Conference title with an 8-3 record.

Before taking over the head coaching reins at J.L. Mann in 1992, Harrelson served as an assistant football coach at Travelers Rest High School for 11 years (1981-91) and, prior to that, served as head coach at Riverside High School for five years (1976-81). From 1971-76 Harrelson worked as an assistant coach at Greenville's Eastside High School.

A native of Johnsonville, S.C., Harrelson graduated from Appalachian State in 1967 and began his coaching career at Andrews (S.C.) High School as an assistant coach later that year. In 1968 he accepting a teaching position at Greenville Junior High School and remained there for four years before moving on to Eastside High School in 1971.

Harrelson, who earned his M.A. in administration in 1974, is married to the former Patsy Shore of Winston-Salem, N.C., and has two children, Amy and Jeff.
