Furman's Julius Dixon Promoted, To Coach Paladin Defensive Line

GREENVILLE -- Furman University head football coach Bobby Johnson announced today that Julius Dixon has been promoted to the position of full-time assistant coach after serving as a restricted earnings assistant coach the past four seasons.

Dixon, who coached Furman's tight ends for two years (1994-95) before heading up the squad's defensive ends the past two seasons, replaces Jimmy Neal, who last week announced his resignation to become athletic director and head football coach at Camden (S.C.) High School.

"Julius' promotion is an excellent opportunity for him and a good move for our football program following Jimmy Neal's decision to accept the position at Camden," Johnson said in making the announcement Wednesday afternoon. "Julius is a former Furman player and a quality person who has earned the respect of everyone who has worked with him. He will do a fine job."

A Toccoa, Ga., native, Dixon was a four-year letterman and three-year starter at cornerback for the Paladins in the late 1980s. He twice earned All-Southern Conference honors and, as a senior, served as a captain of the Paladins' 1988 NCAA I-AA national championship team. He graduated in 1990 with a B.S. degree in political science. Prior to his return to Furman in 1994, he served as an assistant coach for four years at Camden High School (1990-93).
